What Size Is a Diploma? (US, UK, EU and Oversized Formats)

Bachelor degree diploma printed on premium paper in the standard 8.5 by 11 inch format

A diploma is usually 8.5 × 11 inches (US letter) in the United States, A4 (8.27 × 11.69 inches) in the UK, Europe, Australia and much of Asia, and larger again for some doctorate and older documents. There is no single international standard, which is why so many frames end up the wrong size.

The three sizes you will actually meet

Format Inches Millimetres Where it is used
US letter 8.5 × 11 216 × 279 US high schools, colleges and universities
A4 8.27 × 11.69 210 × 297 UK, Ireland, EU, Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Africa
A3 11.69 × 16.54 297 × 420 Some European and Asian institutions, larger award certificates

Letter and A4 look almost identical on a screen. In your hands they are not: A4 is 0.24 inches narrower and 0.69 inches taller. That is enough to leave a visible gap in one frame and crop the border in another.

Sizes that appear outside the standard

Standard sizes cover most diplomas, but not all of them. These turn up often enough to check for:

  • 8 × 10 inches — older US documents and some private schools
  • 9 × 12 inches — common for doctorate and ceremonial formats
  • 11 × 14 inches — large university and law school diplomas
  • Non-standard — documents from institutions that closed decades ago, or that were printed on whatever stock was available

If the document has a printed decorative border, the border counts as part of the document. Cropping it to fit a frame is not reversible, and on an older document it is usually the most valuable part.

How to measure the diploma you have

  1. Lay it flat on a clean, hard surface. Do not fold or roll it to measure.
  2. Measure the width first (left edge to right edge), in inches or millimetres.
  3. Measure the height (top edge to bottom edge).
  4. Write both numbers down before you shop for anything.
  5. If it is going into a frame you already own, measure the opening too — the listed frame size is usually the outside, and the opening is smaller.

A diploma that has been stored rolled will not sit flat immediately. Press it between two clean boards under light weight for a day or two before measuring, or the numbers will be wrong.

Why the size matters more than people expect

Two things happen when a document and a frame do not match:

  • The frame crops the document. The border disappears, and on a sealed document so do parts of the seal or the signature block.
  • The frame is too large. You get a visible gap between the document edge and the mat, which looks like a mistake.

The usual fix is not a custom frame. It is a custom mat: a mat cut to the document size, fitted inside a standard frame. That is cheaper, and it lets you use a frame you already like. A mat of 2 to 3 inches around the document is the practical range — enough to protect the edges and keep the seal visible.

For the measurements that work with each format, see diploma frame sizes and mat widths.

Diploma sizes vs transcript sizes

Transcripts are usually the same size as the diploma — letter in the US, A4 elsewhere — because they were designed to be filed together. That does not mean they fit the same frame: a transcript is normally stored rather than displayed, and folding one to fit a frame damages it permanently.

If you are displaying both, the usual approach is a double-opening mat: diploma on top, transcript below, one frame. The difference between the two documents is covered in diploma vs transcript.

Diploma covers are sized differently

A cover is sized to the document, not to a frame. A letter-size cover holds an 8.5 × 11 diploma; an A4 cover holds an A4. Putting an A4 document into a letter-size cover works, but the document shifts — and putting a letter document into an A4 cover leaves it loose.

If you are buying a cover rather than a frame, match it to the measured document, not to the word "standard".

Common questions

Is a diploma always 8.5 × 11?

In the US, most of the time. Not always: 8 × 10, 9 × 12 and 11 × 14 all appear, and older documents can be any size.

Is A4 the same as letter size?

No. A4 is 8.27 × 11.69 inches; letter is 8.5 × 11. A4 is narrower and taller by about a quarter of an inch in each direction.

What size frame do I need for a diploma?

A frame with an opening larger than the document, plus a mat cut to the document size. Measure the opening, not the frame, before buying.

Can I trim the diploma to fit a frame?

No. Trimming is irreversible, removes the border and often part of the seal, and destroys any value the document has.

Do diploma reproductions come in the same sizes?

Display reproductions are produced at the original document size for the country and institution style you specify, so they take the same frames as the originals. Browse the formats by category: high school, GED, degrees and covers.

Everything sold on this site is a novelty reproduction for display, keepsake and prop use. It is not an official record and cannot be used to verify a qualification.
